This Wednesday, the best athletes and biggest stars in the world will gather at the 2023 ESPYS, presented by Capital One, to celebrate the highlights of the past year in sports. The 2023 ESPYS will air live this July 12 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 Caribbean from The Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony will celebrate the top athletic achievements, relive unforgettable moments, honor outstanding athletes and feature exciting musical performances.
The top athletes like Patrick Mahomes, Mikaela Shiffrin, Justin Jefferson, Jamal Murray, and celebrities including 2 Chainz, Katie Austin, Brie and Nikki Garcia, will all come together to recognize the nominees and winners of “Best Male Athlete”, “Best Female Athlete”, “Best New Athlete”, “Best Record Performance”, “Best Championship”, among other categories.
The award show highlights include:
- Opening performance by five-time Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Wayne.
- Five-time Grammy winner H.E.R. will perform her latest single “The Journey” in a special tribute to the 30th anniversary of the V Foundation and Jim Valvano’s iconic 1993 speech.
- Throughout the night, musical entertainment will be provided by House of Vibe All-Stars.
- Peyton Manning (two-time Super Bowl champion) and Eli Manning (two-time Super Bowl champion) will appear in a sketch comedy.
- The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.
- Chicago White Sox pitcher and cancer survivor Liam Hendriks will be honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance; and the Buffalo Bills coaching staff will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service presented by MassMutual.
- The Sports Humanitarian Awards will feature honorees as part of this year’s awards schedule, including the winner of the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award, the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award, and the Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award.
The nominees for the 2023 ESPYS include:
- LeBron James headlines the “Best Record Performance” category for the first time after breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record, joined by F1 star Max Verstappen; tennis figure Novak Djokovic; and the legend of alpine skiing, Mikaela Shiffrin.
- Aaron Judge and Lionel Messi earn their first “Best Male Athlete” nomination. They join fellow nominees Nikola Jokić and Patrick Mahomes.
- In the “Best Female Athlete” category, three-time nominee Mikaela Shiffrin returns to face three newcomers in the category: A’ja Wilson, Sophia Smith and Iga Świątek.
- Nikola Jokić is the latest drafted player (41st overall in the second round in 2014) to win NBA Finals MVP, beating Dennis Johnson, who was selected No. 29th overall in 1979. Nikola earned 3 ESPY nominations this year to add to his previous 3 nominations.
