ESPN Caribbean will present its third consecutive live and exclusive coverage of the Grenada Invitational, the Southern Caribbean’s premier track and field meet, this Saturday, April 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 Caribbean and ESPN Play. Kirani James, a two-time Olympic medalist and Grenada’s first Olympic medalist, will serve as event ambassador and welcome competing athletes to his namesake stadium in St. George’s. The meet will feature over 140 athletes, including three-time Olympic competitor Asafa Powell and Justin Gatlin, current reigning 100m World Champion and Rio 2016 silver medalist.
Sanctioned by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), the Grenada Invitational is one of the first meets of the annual outdoor track and field season.
ESPN’s 2019 coverage is part of its multi-year acquisition of exclusive rights to the Grenada Invitational through 2020 in the Caribbean, United States and on ESPN digital platforms.
2019 Participants:
Bahamas
- Jeffrey Gibson (participant at Rio 2016), will compete for the Bahamas as a track and field sprinter, specializing in the 400 meters
Canada
- Andre Degrasse (Rio 2016 silver medalist in Men’s 200m) specializes in the 400 meters and will compete for the Bahamas as a track and field sprinter
Grenada
- Lindon Victor (participant at Rio 2016), served as Grenada’s flag bearer for the closing games in the 2016 Olympics
- Rondell Bartholomew (2011 IAAF World Champion) will represent Grenada as a track and field sprinter, specializing in the 400 meters
- Bralon Taplin (participant at Rio 2016), will represent Grenada as a track and field sprinter in the 400 meters, aiming to become the latest Grenadian World champion
Jamaica
- Asafa Powell (2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympian), a world champion sprinter who specializes in the 100 meters
- Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (medalist at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics), the first woman in history to win 100m medals at three consecutive Olympic Games
- Akeem Bloomfield, one of only 18 people in the world to run 400 meters under 44 seconds, will represent Jamaica as a track and field sprinter
St. Lucia
- Levern Spencer, Saint Lucia’s most decorated athlete, won the 2017 Grenada Invitational Women’s High Jump and participated at seven World Championships, three Olympic Games, four Pan American Games (2015 Pan Am Games Champion)
United States
- Justin Gatlin (Rio 2016 silver medalist in Men’s 100m), took the title of 100 meters World Champion from Usain Bolt in 2017
- LaShawn Merrit (Beijing 2008 gold medalist Men’s 400m), who won his 2008 Olympic medal in a personal best time by a record margin of .99 seconds
